When stress and anxiety hit, your first instinct is usually to fix the situation.
Instead, start by controlling the one thing you can immediately influence: your breathing.
Your breath is one of the fastest ways to tell your nervous system that you’re safe. Here are three simple techniques that can help lower stress, improve focus, and reduce anxiety in just a few minutes.
1. Box Breathing
Great before a meeting, presentation, or difficult conversation.
- Inhale for 4 seconds
- Hold for 4 seconds
- Exhale for 4 seconds
- Hold for 4 seconds
Repeat for 2–5 minutes.
2. Physiological Sigh
Perfect when you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious.
- Take one deep inhale through your nose.
- Before exhaling, take a second quick inhale to fully expand your lungs.
- Slowly exhale through your mouth until your lungs are empty.
Repeat 3–5 times. This technique has been shown to rapidly reduce stress by helping remove excess carbon dioxide and calming the nervous system.
3. 4-6 Relaxation Breathing
Ideal before bed or anytime you need to slow your mind.
- Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds
- Exhale slowly for 6 seconds
Continue for 3–5 minutes.
A longer exhale helps activate your body’s relaxation response and can lower your heart rate.
You may not always be able to control what happens around you, but you can control how you respond. Sometimes the fastest way to calm your mind is simply to slow your breath.
